Sebastian Merk

Sebastian Merk is a Berlin-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and video artist. Since 2000, he has been a significant figure in the improvisation and jazz scene, collaborating with luminaries such as Lee Konitz, Ernie Watts, Mark Murphy, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Till Brönner.
In addition to his virtuosic drumming, Merk excels as a keyboardist, pianist, guitarist, and sound artist with visionary concepts.
His diverse career spans numerous bands, projects, theater productions, and releases. He has performed at renowned festivals like the Stuttgart Jazz Open, the German Jazz Festival in Frankfurt, Jazzfest Berlin, and JazzBaltica. International tours have taken him to the USA, Europe, Southeast Asia, South America, Japan, Russia, and Ukraine. Among his musical companions are Johannes Enders, John Schröder, Christian Weidner, and Sebastian Studnitzky.

With his current solo project “Merkur,” he merges electronics, improvisation, and technical exploration into a multimedia Gesamtkunstwerk.
Since 2020, he has also been active as a video artist, producing numerous music videos for various artists. Additionally, he is a regular collaborator in bands led by Matthias Schriefl and Céline Rudolph’s “Soniqs.”

Sebastian Merk lives in Berlin and serves as a professor of drums (Jazz/Rock/Pop) at the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music in Dresden, where he is a key driving force in the German jazz scene.
